Dartmouth Regatta
Limited Edition print
A partial view of the ‘Boat Float’ inner harbour in Dartmouth, with St Saviour’s Church, dating from 1372, in the background. Fireworks explode overhead during the famous annual Dartmouth Regatta, which first began in 1822 and became a Royal Regatta in 1856 when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert came into Dartmouth on a flotilla of 9 boats. That night there were special illuminations both ashore and afloat. The Queen donated £25 for 3 rowing races to be competed for by the sailors of Dartmouth. The Queen sailed to Plymouth the following day, but before leaving, bestowed the title of ‘Royal’ to the Regatta. Today it’s a a fun packed weekend of sailing, gig boat racing, live music and fireworks!
